Culture and facts
Off in the car for a trip…
What is there to see and experience in Luxembourg, if you want to get out and about from Kautenbach Campsite? What kind of daytrip can you make with the car, and where to? We are more than happy to help you choose. Luxembourg is a country with lots of culture, castles, churches, Roman remains, cliffs and mines, folklore, etc. Exciting and interesting for young and old alike.
When you drive back to the Campsite the children will be fast asleep in the back of the car.
Tourists can
Visit lots of lovely places like: Diekirch, Ettelbrück, Clervaux, Bastogne (B), Wiltz etc..
Wander through the caves at Consdorf, You’ll need to take a torch with you because it’s really dark in there.
Admire the woodlands and the castle at Beaufort. Walk along the woodland path right in front of the castle. You feel so much smaller between the rock faces. And look carefully at the stone, a totally different type and quality than in Kautenbach.
And then on to Echternach where you can visit the Cathedral of Willibrordus with its crypt. This is a fabulous day out with the car. Don’t take the main road, but go via Vianden and Wallendorf
On the 3rd day of Whitsun there is the Spring Parade in Echternach. You really have to see this once in your life.
Plunge into the Müllerthal, also called Little Switzerland. A unique piece of nature formed by lots of erosion and weathering.
You could take one day out for Vianden. Walk here through the little back streets. You almost expect to come across knights in armour. You’d have a hard time finding anywhere that felt more mediaeval if you tried. And why not take the cable car up the hill. When you get to the top you’ll have wonderful views of the little town of Vianden. Vianden also has a beautiful, nicely restored castle (old Orange property). You should also visit the hydraulic power station in the reservoir. The nut market in Vianden takes place on the second Sunday in October every year.
And a visit to Esch-sur-Süre is also worth the tour. Another wonderful example of a mediaeval town. Time here has really stood still. Beautiful castle on a high cliff, just head on up and count the steps. The small church is also worth a visit. Oh and yes, if you come across the sexton, ask him if he has the key to the church and if he will show it you!! You’ll be amazed.
The dam in the Süre is of great technical interest. You can canoe on the reservoir at Lultzhausen and you can also swim in it. Not near the dam of course. That would be far too dangerous.
Check out the old bygone techniques used in the old stone quarry at Michelau. Head towards the Süre following signs to Ettelbruck. Cross the Bailey Bridge. It is not a tourist attraction (so there is no charge). But it is very impressive.
The Castle of Bourscheid is also accessible to the public and is worth visiting It is actually three castles in one. From the towers of this castle you have a really fantastic panoramic view of the Süre valley.
The city of Luxembourg has a completely different allure. Beautiful buildings, lots of green, the Casemates, the palace, national museum, different churches including the cathedral and lots more. You can often pick up a tour with a guide.
Clervaux, visit the photo exhibition “The Family of Man”, castle, church and convent. Clervaux has a beautiful shopping street and friendly terraces.
Go for a boat trip on the Moselle.
Or you could combine a visit to the Butterfly Garden Grevenmacher with a visit to the wine cellars along the Moselle.
Stolzembourg and its copper mines.
On Whit Monday there is a flower parade for the occasion of the Bremfeest in Wiltz. Top musicians will be appearing during the open air festival in the summer.
Tour the churches. Most churches are open to visitors. This is a Luxembourg village church.
Look at castles. We have already named a few. They are all open to visitors.
